Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
Notice about exchanges to Hong Kong for 2020/21
Students are welcome to apply to Hong Kong universities for exchange for the 2020/21 academic year.
In fall 2019, due to the escalation of protests, classes were cancelled at both Hong Kong University (HKU) and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Laurier requested that students leave the territory and Laurier students completed their terms online. Laurier will not send students to Hong Kong for the winter 2020 term.
Both Hong Kong partner institutions are accepting nominations for 2020/21; however, exchange placement decisions are made in February 2020 for the 2020/21 academic year. If, by the February 2020 decision date, Global Affairs Canada increases the travel advisory to Hong Kong to avoid non-essential travel, or there is an increase in violent protest again in the territory to a point that Laurier considers it too high a risk, students who applied for exchange at Hong Kong institutions will be considered for their alternate choices.
The risk level increases in Hong Kong will be monitored on an ongoing basis. If circumstances change after February 2020 or our Hong Kong partner universities cancel classes, offers to students selected to go to Hong Kong will be withdrawn by Laurier International, and we will do our best to offer alternative locations for exchange, or facilitate attending Laurier instead. Placements may be cancelled by Laurier or by the partner institution at any time before or during the placement term, when safety and security of students is considered to be a risk.
Note: HKUST will not consider Laurier exchange students of Chinese nationality.
Why Choose HKUST?
- Travel tours around Asia are inexpensive.

University of Hong Kong (HKU)
Note: The University of Hong Kong will not consider Laurier exchange students of Chinese nationality.
