Resumés and Cover Letters

A targeted resumé is essential for an effective application to any type of job. The Career Centre is here is assist you in preparing an effective resumé, cover letter and application. Many students believe that their resumé is good enough – either by borrowing a friend’s template, using advice from a family member or looking for assistance online. Professional advice for your resumé and cover letter helps you to create application documents that are more targeted and effective.

The following services are available to you:

  • Attend a Resumé Writing workshop.
  • Attend a Cover Letter Writing workshop.
  • Earn a Career Development Certificate.
  • Book an appointment to meet with a Career Centre staff member (if you are an undergraduate student at the Waterloo campus, please attend a resumé writing workshop prior to booking an appointment).
  • Come to the Career Centre for a 10-minute appointment during drop-in hours.
  • Meet with a peer advisor at a Career Centre Information Booth at the Waterloo campus for a quick resumé check.
  • Read the Career Centre's resumé guidebook, which contains sample resumés, CV, cover letters as well as tips for preparing effective documents.
  • View the Career Centre's transferable skills booklet, which contains an inventory of key skills sought by employers including variations in wording to assist you in the preparation of your resumé and cover letter.

Interviews

The Career Centre is here is assist you in preparing for interviews including developing an interview agenda and knowing what types of questions to expect. The following services are available to you:

  • Attend an Interview Success workshop.
  • Earn a Career Development Certificate.
  • Book an appointment to meet with a Career Centre staff member. Start with an interview coaching appointment and then have a mock interview.
  • Come to the Career Centre for a 10-minute appointment during drop-in hours.
  • Read the Career Centre's interview guidebook (available in print at the Career Centre).
  • Read the Career Centre's interview questions by field document.
  • Research organizations and interview questions on Glassdoor.
  • Create a professional career portfolio.
