Canadian Association of Hispanists' prestigious award for the best undergraduate essay to Emma Stobo
Congratulations to recent Languages graduate, Emma Stobo, who has just won the Canadian Association of Hispanists' prestigious award for the best undergraduate essay (Premio Nela Rio del Registro Creativo). Emma wrote her essay in SP496: Coming of Age, a course that offers an opportunity to analyze lliterature and youth culture in depth, through reading and comparing coming-of-age novels published in the Hispanic world.
In her essay, Emma analyzes coming-of-age stories of two protagonists: Ana in Carlos Saura's 1976 movie Cria cuervos and Esperanza in Sandra Cisnero's 1984 novel The House on Mango Street. In their evaluations, members of the jury noted that Emma's essey aptly compares notions of interiority and mobility in both works of fiction, while contrasting femela coming-of-age stories in them with coming-of-age stories that focus on male characters.
Dr. Marc Olivier Reid who taught SP496 in Fall 2021 comments that Emma is an 'original thinker, whose style of writing is outstanding. She adeptly employs literary theory to support her readings.' Emma graduated with an Honours BA in Languages in June 2022 and was a recipient of the Alumni Gold Medal for the highest achieving students in Faculty of Arts.
Many congratulations Emma on the well deserved accomplishement. See here.
