Study Abroad and Explore the World!

Imagine finishing an exam at the University of Amsterdam and biking home along the historic canals or taking a cruise down the Yangtze, while attending the University of Chongqing in China. Laurier’s Student Exchange Program enables Laurier students to study abroad for an incredible academic and cultural experience. Pay Laurier tuition and earn Laurier credits! Laurier has partner universities all around the globe to choose from: 65 partner universities in 25 countries!

There are 91 exchange students studying here at Laurier, so you may have already met one in your classes. For Taylor, here on exchange from Western Sydney University, the experience has really opened her eyes to the world around her.  “I’ve discovered my independence; I’ve developed a greater understanding of my own culture, as well as being able to explore and appreciate that of others. It’s not until stepping foot outside of my country that I’ve been able to get a true appreciation of culture.”

The Student Exchange Program allows for a unique experience to immerse oneself in a different culture and take part in opportunities not offered here in Canada or at Laurier. Gaining part of your education abroad allows you to see how other people live, learn and how beautiful the world can be.

Taylor commented that “Studying overseas seemed like the perfect opportunity to venture out of my comfort zone and see the world, whilst simultaneously being able to complete part of my education.”

For Hope, a fourth year Youth and Children Studies student at Laurier, studying abroad at Karlstad, Sweden seemed daunting at first. Upon her return to Laurier she now cherishes the memories made abroad. “It was such an amazing experience to travel around Europe, meet new friends from all over the world, and to be able to experience the Scandinavian education system, something I had only learned about in my Laurier lectures."

The application process through Laurier International does a good job of preparing you before departing on your adventure, helping you to understand how much your time abroad will cost and the course options you may have at your host university. Laurier students are eligible to go abroad in their third, fourth, or fifth year for either one or two semesters. The application deadline to go abroad in the fall of 2017 and winter of 2018 is 4 p.m. on Jan. 27, 2017 and completed applications should be handed into the Laurier International office.

The exchange program is such a wonderful and unique experience and for Taylor, one she will always remember. “It’s the ultimate opportunity to make lasting memories, challenge yourself, expand your horizons, and grow. Global mobility will change you for the better; it’s a big world out there, so go explore it.”
