Celebrating Graduate Student Success

March is a month-long celebration of our graduate students. The campaign, "Celebrating Graduate Student Success", will highlight the contribution to knowledge and culture made by Laurier’s graduate student community.

Starting Mar. 9, "Celebrating Graduate Student Success" will feature three community-driven initiatives including the Graduate Community Cook-Off, Kernels of Knowledge and our annual 3MT Laurier.

“As a University, we should strive to highlight the students’ success and accomplishments,” said Tamas Dobozy, Acting Dean: Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS). "This is a celebration of our what our graduate student community brings to Laurier's graduate programs and the institution as a whole in terms of research and publishing, teaching, and service."

Kicking it off with Food

Like so many of the best celebrations, this one begins with food.  The FGPS, Laurier International and the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) are hosting the Graduate Community Cook-off on Mar. 9 at 3:30 p.m. at the Veritas Café by the GSA.

Help us celebrate the diversity of our graduate student community by sampling some of our graduate student food creations. The entire Laurier community is invited to come by and cast a ballot for your favourite dish. The food is free for students, faculty and staff.

The winning cook will have its dish featured on the Veritas menu.

Share your Kernels of Knowledge

Bring your knowledge to the forefront.  Share your research. Teach us something new. Kernels of Knowledge is open to all Laurier students, faculty and staff.

Summarize a recent paper you read or wrote, your thesis, or just an interesting piece of information that is bouncing around in your brain in 200 characters or less. Please note that your kennels must be verifiable, so in keeping with the spirit of knowledge mobilization we will be asking you to cite sources. Let's eliminate #alternatefacts.

Submit your Kernel of Knowledge and we will post it across at select locations around campus and on our facebook and twitter accounts throughout March. Submit your Kernel by Mar. 12 to be eligible to win 1 of 10, $10 Laurier Bookstore gift cards. Only current Laurier students are eligible for the draw. Winners will be contacted through their Laurier student e-mail account.

3MT with a twist

This is our fifth annual 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) at Laurier. On Mar 24, 21 graduate students will take the stage to tell the Laurier community about their research in just three minutes to a non-specialist audience in plain language.

To celebrate our fifth competition, and in keeping with our Celebration of Graduate Success at Laurier, we have added to the competition by asking three faculty members to participate, in telling us how graduate students contribute to the success of the research enterprise at Laurier.

The competition starts at 9 a.m. in the Senate and Board Chambers.
