Women and Careers in Economics
The Laurier Economics Club (LEC) partnered with Women in Leadership Laurier (WILL) to hold their Women in Economics event on March 19, 2019.
The event featured guest speakers Jane Voll, Regional Director at the Bank of Canada; Christine Neill, Associate Professor at the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics, and Kelsey Lise, an alumnus of Laurier's Economics programs.
This event, which was the first of its kind for the LEC, focused on recognizing the gender issue in the field of economics, and sparking conversation on how to combat and eliminate it.
Panel members spoke on their personal experiences as women in the field and changes they have noticed in the industry over the last number of years. Although it is clear that the treatment of and attitude towards women in the workplace has evolved over the past few decades, it is evident that we still have a way to go. The event underscored the importance of these conversations and that they must include both women and men in order to move forward.
The LEC has several initiatives in place for the next academic year to promote women's involvement in the wider Canadian economics community.
