The Laurier Business and Economics Review (LBER) is a student-led organization that offers a platform for students to engage critically with pressing economic and business issues of the day. The 2024/25 LBER executive team, led by co-presidents Chris Kassis and Blake Schriver, with support from Dennis Sadevich and Nolan Roncato, the external relations team, and executive vice president Ryan Wilson, undertook a range of initiatives to support its mission to educate, inform and connect students.
One of the major highlights was the expansion of the LBER’s podcast series, which brought in new voices and fresh perspectives on key issues. Among the standout episodes was an interview with Waterloo MP Bardish Chagger, in which she discussed Canada’s housing crisis and the diverse impacts of immigration policy. Her important insights provided students with a unique look into how federal policy can make an impact into our local community.
LBER also engages in informal discussions with professors to explore connections between classroom learning with real-world economic issues. A particularly impactful conversation was held with Dr. Tracy Snoddon, who chatted with LBER’s Nolan Roncato about Canada’s fiscal federalism challenges in light of recent economic and political developments south of the border.
A signature LBER contribution is its newsletter containing student-written articles covering a wide breadth of finance, technology, and public policy topics. The publication provides students in the Laurier community a chance to contribute meaningfully to ongoing economic discourse and serves as a launchpad for aspiring economists, policy analysts, and business professionals.
To engage with creative thinkers in the Lazaridis community, LBER hosted an Article Pitch Competition, inviting students to propose their own article ideas for the chance to win prizes and have it published on the LBER website. This event encouraged participants to think critically, refine their research skills, and present ideas on pressing issues in our current society. This year’s winners were Jackson Hood and Lydia Feng and resulted in an article on sports betting and gambling addiction.
While academic engagement remains at the heart of LBER, the club also makes time for community and celebration. Social events like the Halloween Potluck and Midterm Movie Night this past year offered students a break from their studies and a chance to connect with one another in a relaxed environment. These moments of connection helped create a stronger sense of community within the club.
As the 2024/45 year comes to a close, the Laurier Economics and Business Review stands proud of its accomplishments and the meaningful impact it has made on campus. Through its podcasts, publications, competitions, and social events, LBER has successfully created a vibrant space where students can engage with the world of economics and business beyond the classroom.
We look forward to seeing what new co presidents, Elizabeth Kamenetsky and Fernando Iannetta have in store for 2025/26!
