LED Alumni Spotlight: Roderick Gomez, BA Economics ('03)

Roderick graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, after which he completed level II of the CFA Exam. He is currently a Principal at Normandin Beaudry where he provides strategic investment advice to institutional clients. Prior to joining the firm in 2025, Roderick was an Associate Director at a global consulting firm where he advised defined contribution and defined benefit plan clients regarding asset mix, investment structures, recordkeeper reviews and manager selection. He has also been an Investment Consultant at a Canadian firm where he provided investment advice to multi-employer pension plans, corporate and non-profit organizations, and led investment manager research covering investment managers in Canada, the U.S. and Western Europe. 

Outside his job, he volunteers on the Finance and Investment Committee for Architectural Conservancy Ontario, a non-profit organization that focuses on conserving heritage properties and land in Ontario.  

Why did you choose to study economics at Laurier?  

The reason why I chose to study economics at Laurier was largely due to the fact that Laurier was known for and was ranked as one of the best business and economics universities in Canada.  In addition to this, the school had a smaller student-to-professor ratio relative to the larger schools which meant that the quality of education and access to the professor made a real difference in my learnings.   

What is one thing you remember best from Laurier?  

It’s been over 20 years since I graduated from Laurier and the main take away that I still remember is the experience itself.  Living away from home, stepping outside my comfort zone and meeting other students from all over Ontario and Canada.  A great experience about life, learning, growing and having fun at the same time.  Laurier was a school I am proud I chose for my educational journey. 

What are you working on currently, and what do you find most exciting about it?   

I am currently an Investment Consultant to institutional clients (pension plans, indigenous trusts, non-profits and financial institutions).  The role entails assisting these clients with respect to investing their assets in the most efficient way possible while meeting their financial obligations for the benefit of the organization and/or their pensioners.  Educating clients and ensuring they meet their financial objectives provides personal satisfaction knowing that clients can sleep well at night.
