The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies invites applications for instructional assistants for the Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 terms in GG101: Introduction to Physical Geography.
Duties: Instructional Assistants (IA’s) are responsible for marking lab assignments as directed by the GG101 Lab Coordinator in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. Other responsibilities may include preparation, marks database management, weekly meetings with the Lab Coordinator, and marking of exams. The Instructional Assistant is provided a marking guide with minimal discretion in grading.
The usual time commitment is 10 hours per week. However, some weeks IA’s may be required to work more (or less) than 10 hours per week because of time-sensitive course requirements in marking of lab assignments, or exams.
The lab assignment marking will include a combination of student paper submissions and electronic submissions to MyLS using the MyLS Dropbox. Paper assignments are secured in a departmental designated room and are marked in that room. Meetings with the Lab Coordinator will be held in person in the Lab Coordinator office. Instructional Assistants will need to be on campus for these activities.
Qualifications: Qualified applicants must be registered in a program within the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies or a related discipline. We invite applications from 3rd and 4th year undergraduates. Only if there are no Laurier students who meet the qualifications of the position will a non-Laurier student be considered.
Compensation: $20.91/hr as per marking-only rates.
Application Process: Applicants should submit a Letter of Interest which expresses the applicant's suitability for the position, accompanied by any supporting material and an unofficial copy of their LORIS transcript. Please include a schedule of availability for the Fall 2023 term. Applications should be sent by e-mail, indicating the position being applied for in the subject line (GG101 IA Position).
Wilfrid Laurier University is committed to equity and values diversity. We welcome applications from qualified individuals of all genders and sexual orientations, persons with disabilities, Indigenous persons, and persons of a visible minority.
