    Examples and basic properties of groups and rings including their substructures, quotient structures and homomorphisms.

    MA215 or MA222.

    A First Course in Abstract Algebra by John Fraleigh, 7th Edition (2003), Addison-Wesley.

    Calculators

    Only non-programmable, non-graphing calculators are allowed during the midterm test, and the final examination.

    Evaluation

    A final mark out of 100 will be calculated as follows:

    • Four Assignments: 20%
    • Midterm Exam (Thursday, Oct. 25, in class): 30%
    • Final Exam (2 hours, exact date, time and location to be announced): 50%

    The final mark will be reported as a letter grade in accordance with the conversion table of the current undergraduate calendar.
