Sustainability in Action: Laurier Strengthens Commitment with Revised Policy

In April 2025, Wilfrid Laurier University’s Board of Governors approved a revised 4.13 Sustainability Policy, strengthening our commitment to integrating sustainable practices into every facet of university life—from academics and research to operations and investments.

The revised policy builds on Laurier’s deep-rooted values and aspiration to be a sustainability leader in higher education. It aligns with key institutional strategies, including the Sustainability Action Plan (2023–2028) and Carbon Reduction Roadmap, and supports global commitments such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

What’s new in the revised policy?

    1. Enhanced accountability:
Responsibility for sustainability oversight now rests with the Vice-President: Finance and Administration. This shift ensures comprehensive oversight and implementation of sustainability practices across all university departments.
    2. Clearer definitions:
An expanded definitions section helps clarify key sustainability concepts, enabling a shared understanding and consistent application across the Laurier community.
    3. Alignment with global standards:
The policy reflects current best practices and aligns Laurier’s sustainability efforts with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing our global impact.
    4. A structured framework for action:
A restructured approach to the Guiding Principles and Sustainability Framework highlights the integration of sustainability into operations, academics, research, engagement, and financial decision-making.
    5. Transparency and reporting:
A new Accountability section includes clear mechanisms for reporting progress on the Sustainability Action Plan, fostering a culture of openness and continuous improvement.

These updates not only strengthen the policy’s effectiveness but also ensure that sustainability remains at the core of Laurier’s decision-making and culture.

We encourage all students, faculty, and staff to read the revised policy and consider how its principles can be reflected in your work, studies, and daily choices. Together, we can drive meaningful change and continue to make a lasting impact—on our campuses, in our communities, and around the world.
