Fitness Centre

The fitness centre provides a wide selection of equipment, including:

  • Over 100 pieces of cardio training equipment including treadmills, elliptical and lateral machines, stair climbers, upright and recumbent bikes, an upper-body ergometer, a rope trainer and rowing machines.
  • Four complete cable machine circuits.
  • Extensive free weight section complete with six Hammer Strength Power Racks, rubberized dumbbells and plates, and over 15 free weight benches.
  • Full TRX suspension is available for individual use or group classes.

Women-Only Program Hours

Specific to the Waterloo campus, the fitness centre includes a unique space on the second floor that is closed off during certain hours of the day to become a women-only program area. This space includes everything required for a full-encompassing workout such as cardio equipment, circuit machines, incline and decline benches, free-weights, accessories and floor space for stretching and training.


A valid Laurier OneCard serves as an Athletics and Recreation membership for all full and part-time students. With a OneCard, students can sign out a lock for the day and use lockers each time they visit the facilities.

All fitness and recreational classes and instruction require an additional fee to assist with the instructional component to the class. Registration takes place early in the term through an online process.

Group Exercise

The Group Exercise pass gives you more variety of classes and more convenient class times. Available for $50 plus HST for the term, the pass includes classes such as Bootcamp, Cyclefit, Muscle Pump, Yoga, Pilates and more. If you are not planning on attending Group Exercise classes on a regular basis, a drop-in fee of $7 per class is available.

Athletic Complex

Stay in shape while completing your studies at Laurier! The Athletic Complex (AC) is home to many of our sports and recreation facilities.

The facility provides a full towel service, equipment rentals and change room facilities. Explore what the facility has to offer!

Alumni Field

Alumni field offers a full-sized, FIFA-certified, artificial surface for both intramurals and club teams. During the fall and winter terms, access is available only to students.

Dance and Aerobic Studios

The Athletic Complex has 4 dance and aerobic studios. Built with quality hardwood and rubber flooring, surrounding mirrors, complete music systems and ballet bars (in select studios), the studios are used for over 50 instructional fitness and dance classes each week. Many different styles and levels are offered to suit a multitude of participants. It is a great way to try something new or enhance your abilities while receiving a great weekly workout.

Each class creates a dance routine that will be performed by the end of each semester in the Dance Showcase. All of the classes offered occur weekly for 10 weeks and are one hour and 15 minutes in length.

Rental and Booking

These studios are free of charge for patrons with memberships but must be booked in advance to guarantee space. Studio 3 is used strictly as a drop-in studio and is available to book for 30-minute increments at any time.

The studios can be booked at the Hawk Desk or online by signing in under User Services.

Olympic-Size Pool

The pool is Olympic length (50m) and features six swimming lanes; however, it is two lanes short of meeting National and Olympic standards. A gallery is located on the second floor of the Athletic Complex to view the pool activity below.

Laurier’s pool is home to the Golden Hawk swimming team, the Region of Waterloo (ROW) Swim Club, the Laurier competitive lifeguarding team, prospective National Team members and many previous Olympic swimmers.

The pool also provides over 30 hours of recreation programming every week, including lane swimming and intramurals.

Aquatics Programs

The aquatics program includes swimming and lifesaving instruction. Private and group lessons are offered to members who are interested in learning basic swimming skills or improve their stroke, speed and endurance.

Lifesaving instruction courses include the Lifesaving Society bronze awards, first aid courses and National Lifesaving certification.

Lane Swims

Fit in lane swimming between classes, work on your strokes or get a great workout in. The pool has designated times for lane swimming to fit your schedule.

Rental and Booking

All pool bookings require the legal number of lifeguards on deck. All lifeguards must be supplied by Laurier Athletics and Recreation.

Rock Climbing Wall

The AC houses a fun and challenging rock climbing wall featuring over 50 fibreglass panels mounted on steel framework, providing 15 routes that reach 25 feet in height.

The wall is designed to provide a personal level of challenge with movable hand and foot grips that can be changed depending on the user’s preference. Simulating natural contours and foot holds, it is specifically designed for teaching basic climbing and mountaineering skills. It is a great place for new climbers to start improving their upper-body strength or for experienced climbers to fit regular workouts into their week.


Students and members can purchase a term pass for a fee of $20 plus HST to access any of the climbing wall’s hours of operation. Single day drop-in passes are also available at the Hawk Desk for $5.

Members must pass a belay test in order to use the structure.

Rental and Group Booking

Instructors are required for all climbing sessions and must be provided by Laurier Athletics and Recreation.

Group bookings are typically between $60 to $80 for the group, depending on the number of participants or booking time.

Squash Courts

Two international squash courts are located in the Athletic Complex. The courts are offered at no charge as part of the AC membership.

Rental and Booking

Raquets and balls can be rented from the Hawk Desk for a nominal fee.

To book a court, please use the Athletics and Recreation e-Commerce and User Services System. An account is required to book and you can book a court up to three days in advance. Alternatively, you can book a court at the Hawk Desk.

Brantford students have a unique setting to stay fit in a heritage renovated building. The Wilkes House Recreation Centre is fully equipped with weight and cardio rooms to meet your fitness needs. The centre also includes a gymnasium and specialty interest space for activities ranging from yoga and pilates to aerobics and dance.


Wilkes House Recreation Centre memberships are included in your tuition and your OneCard serves as your membership card. Simply use your OneCard to gain access to the gym and all fitness facilities during operational hours.

In addition, YMCA Brantford offers additional fitness classes and a large fitness facilities to all members. The facility is located just a couple blocks away from campus. YMCA Brantford membership are offered to Laurier students at a discount of 50% off for the school year at $19.49 per month. If you are looking for more space or just a change of scenery from Wilkes House, YMCA Brantford is a great resource to take advantage of.

Group Exercise

Laurier Brantford in collaboration with the Brantford YMCA offers fitness classes and hours of aerobic programming each week. The new bundled fitness schedule gives you more class variety and more convenient class times. Now bundled into one schedule, classes such as Bootcamp, Cyclefit, Rock Bottom, Yoga, Zumba, Hip Hop and much more will give you that extra push you are looking for!

All fitness classes are free to any Laurier student, Wilkes facility member or YMCA member. For non-members who are interested in participating, a fitness class pass can be purchased for $2.
