    Your Job Search Checklist

    Your job search should contain both passive and active strategies. Here’s a quick checklist to maximize your opportunities

    • Sign up for job alerts and create a saved search in Navigator
    • Review your career information by major guide and browse our alumni career profiles for sample career options 
    • Research specific jobs to compare them with your skills, interests and preferences
    • Understand your transferable skills and competencies so you can clearly communicate what you have to offer to an employer 
    • Use tailored resumés and cover letters for all applications
    • Prepare a list of potential employers, identifying specific industries and fields of interest
    • Create a networking action plan with weekly timelines and goals
    • Create a document to track your connections, their contact details and your touchpoints
    • Network with existing contacts, reach out to new contacts and seek out in-person networking events
    • Stay in touch with contacts, providing updates and inquiring about new opportunities
    • Prepare answers to possible interview questions and develop an interview agenda
    • Send follow-up messages after interviews and new job leads

    Sample Networking Action Plan

    Monday: Research

    Research 5-10 organizations to identify new contacts.

    Tuesday: Connect

    Reach out to the new contacts, requesting information or an informational interview.

    Wednesday: Update Job Materials

    Tailor your resumé and cover letter to specific job roles.

    Thursday: Schedule & Follow-Up

    Schedule meetings with those who responded and follow up with existing connections and warm contacts for leads.

    Friday: Identify Networking Events

    Register for local events that offer networking opportunities.

    Daily: Ongoing Tasks

    Check emails, LinkedIn messages, job postings, and alerts.
