Professionalism Expectations for Employer Events
This guide outlines what’s expected when you attend employer events hosted by the Career Centre. These sessions are a valuable way to build your career readiness and represent yourself and Laurier professionally.
-
Attendance & Punctuality
If you register for an event, plan to attend the full session. Arriving on time and staying until the end shows respect and professionalism. Missing events without notice negatively impacts Laurier’s reputation with employers and can affect your access to future opportunities.
-
No-Show & Cancellation Policy
If you can’t attend, cancel your registration at least 24 hours in advance through Navigator or by emailing recruitlaurier@wlu.ca. You’ll receive a reminder email the day before. Frequent no-shows or late cancellations may limit your access to future employer events. Attendance for all employer events will be recorded.
-
Professionalism & Conduct
Be respectful and courteous to employers, staff, faculty, and fellow students. Avoid side conversations, disruptive behaviour, and excessive phone use during sessions.
-
In-Person & Virtual Participation
In-person: Arrive early, dress appropriately, and bring materials like a resumé or notebook.
Virtual: Test your tech, join on time, and keep your camera on if possible. Consider using a custom Laurier background for Zoom and MS Teams.
-
Dress Code Guidelines
Business casual is usually appropriate for employer sessions. For interviews, business professional attire is recommended to create a positive and polished impression.
-
Preparation & Engagement
Research the employer, prepare questions, and practice your elevator pitch. Stay engaged throughout the session. Prepare for networking by reviewing the Job Search and Networking Guidebook or attend a Career Centre workshop.
-
Offer Commitment
Accepting a job offer is a serious commitment. Don’t accept unless you’re sure. Backing out after accepting can damage your reputation and Laurier’s. If you are unsure, before accepting the offer, you may want to ask for additional time to the deadline to carefully weigh the offer and/or seek guidance by booking a career consulting appointment.
-
Provide accurate information
Provide factual and accurate information in your application documents. Never alter your transcript; it’s unethical and can lead to serious consequences. If you’re concerned about your grades, the Career Centre can help you highlight your strengths in other ways. Book a career consulting appointment to learn how.
