Whether you need a little help getting your resume, cover letter, or interview skills ready for job applications, we can help you feel more prepared and confident. We’re senior co-op students who have been through it all: applying, interviewing, and landing work terms, and we’re here to share what we’ve learned.

The Co-op Peer Mentor Program provides an excellent opportunity to build your work-related skills while supporting your career development, all while helping fellow Golden Hawks succeed in co-op!

About the role
The Co-op Peer Mentor Program consists of a team of senior co-op students who volunteer in-person or virtually who:
- Support for resumé and cover letter critiques, interview preparation, job search and networking advice.
- Organize and facilitate student panels, speaker series events, and other mentorship activities.
- Create and maintain resources, such as training materials, guides and reference documents.
- Provide feedback and suggestions to co-op staff through focus groups and advisory meetings to enhance services and student support.
- Collaborate with co-op staff to ensure events align with student skill development, networking interests and career preparation.
- Can volunteer for a 2-hour shift per week, scheduled between 10am and 2pm, Monday to Friday, either virtual or in-person.
Requirements
We are looking for volunteers who:
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Maintain a high level of customer service, confidentiality and interpersonal skills while working with students who may be experiencing stress.
- Are passionate about developing their own career awareness and helping fellow students succeed.
- Are willing to take on projects that support helping other students succeed in the co-op program.
Who Should Apply?
Senior co-op students who are enthusiastic about mentoring others and are looking for a volunteer opportunity that draws from your co-op experiences in a consulting and advisory setting.
Training
New volunteers begin preparation for their duties in advance by completing virtual training assignments and videos on MyLearningSpace prior to the start of term.

I love bringing people together for networking events and tech conferences. When I’m not at school or work, you’ll usually find me binge-watching Grey’s Anatomy, hanging out with my cat, or painting murals on my walls. Co-op Advice to Junior Students: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and put yourself out there. Whether it’s reaching out to someone on LinkedIn, volunteering for a project, or just being curious about how things work, those little steps go a long way. Your curiosity is your biggest asset!

I also love to travel with family and friends and take care of my house plants. Co-op Advice to Junior Students: Be open-minded to trying out roles in different industries. You might discover skills and interests you didn’t know you had, and experiences from one industry usually transfer well into another. Also, take every co-op as an opportunity to strengthen certain abilities that are applicable in any career.

Stay curious and talk to upper-year students or alumni whenever you can, because those conversations often give you insights and open doors you wouldn’t find on your own.

HARISH Program/Year: Kinesiology, 4th Year Co-op Experience: Work Term 1: Summer Program Leader at Extend-A-Family Work Term 2: Summer Program Director at Extend-A-Family Interests & Hobbies: I love weightlifting, strength training, and just about any sport (especially basketball). I’ve been a Marvel fan since childhood and keep up with the MCU (still waiting for more Deadpool). My go-to eats are 4 Seasons Shawarma in Waterloo or any sushi buffet. I also enjoy spending time with friends and catching up with family. Co-op Advice to Junior Students: Don’t shy away from intimidating opportunities. They often lead to the most growth. When I stepped up from Summer Program Leader to LIT Program Director at Extend-A-Family, I was nervous about the added responsibility and being the first to run the program. But it became one of my most rewarding co-op experiences, strengthening my leadership skills, building relationships, and boosting my confidence. Embrace challenges, stay open to learning, and lean on your team. You’ll grow more than you expect.
