Monday Morning Math Clinics
Come refresh your skill set in foundational topics and become better prepared to be successful in your mathematics courses. During these clinics you will have an opportunity to practice and deepen your conceptual knowledge of essential skills.
All workshops and clinics are facilitated by professional staff from Math and Course Learning Support.
Winter term schedule; all Monday Morning Math clinics take place in room LH1018A:
- Algebra
- Monday Jan. 12, 10:30 a.m. - 11:20 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.
- Algebra is used throughout university mathematics courses. In algebra, symbols and arithmetic operations work together to make meaning. In the clinic we will review what mathematical expressions are, how to manipulate them correctly, and common techniques to use. Skills reviewed include: laws of exponents, factoring, rational expressions and polynomial long division.
- Equations
- Monday Jan. 19, 10:30 a.m. - 11:20 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.
- Equations are used often in mathematics. They are mathematical statements that two expressions are equal to each other. They model real life situations and relationships. In the clinic we will review how to solve various types of equations (quadratic, rational, systems of linear equations…) as well as inequalities. The techniques reviewed are commonly used and important to fully understand.
- Functions
- Monday, Jan. 26, 10:30 a.m. - 11:20 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.
- Functions describe specific relations between things and can be used to accurately describe and model lots of real-life scenarios and relationships. In the clinic we will refresh your understanding of: what a function is; standard functions, their characteristics and their graphs; and function transformations, composition, and inverses.
- Exponential & Logarithmic Functions
- Monday, Feb. 2, 10:30 a.m. - 11:20 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.
- One of the most famous examples of inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, can be used to model many real-life phenomena, such as population growth. In the clinic we will review the characteristics and graphs of exponential functions and logarithmic functions; refresh your memory on their properties; and solve a variety of practice problems involving them. These two function families are used extensively in many math courses so becoming comfortable with them is highly recommended.
- Trigonometric Functions
- Monday, Feb. 9, 10:30 a.m. - 11:20 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.
- In this clinic we will refresh your trig knowledge by reviewing angle measure, the trigonometry of right-angled triangles, and trigonometric ratios. We will then review the characteristics and graphs of the sine, cosine, and tangent functions; explore transformations involving these functions; and solve practice problems. We will review trigonometric identities and laws and then solve equations involving trigonometric terms. Having a solid understanding of these functions will prepare you to solve more complex problems involving them in your mathematics course.
