While academic writing can often be difficult and complex, it is rooted in basic grammatical units. Knowing how to distinguish and use these grammatical units can help writers construct effective written work. In this 60-minute workshop, we will inquire into the mechanics of the English language by focusing on the different grammatical units: a) parts of speech (e.g., nouns and verbs), b) phrases and clauses, and c) sentence types.
By developing a strong knowledge of grammar conventions, writers can make effective choices in their academic work. In this 60-minute workshop, we will discuss numerous common grammatical challenges and learn how to revise them. This includes comma splices, sentence fragments, and dangling modifiers.

It is important before engaging in more complex writing tasks such as reflection, analysis, and evaluation. In this 60-minute workshop, we will learn strategies for effectively incorporating the work of other scholars into our academic writing. This includes strategies for how to quote, summarize, and paraphrase the work of others.
