Calculating GPA:
- List all courses taken or attempted and include credit weight (1.0 credit or 0.5 credit usually). Please note that most courses at Laurier have a weight of 0.5 credits, even though the grade point scale is based on 1.0 credit weight.
- List the grade point next to each course. If a course has a 0.5 credit weight, remember that it will be given half the value of the grade point. For example, BU127 (0.5 credits) with a B+ should be written as 4.5 (half of the 9.0 grade points because the course has a half credit weight).
- Add all grade points.
- Divide by the total number of credits to determine GPA.

Illustration Three – Conclusion on Progression and GPA
This student may progress to the next year of the BBA program because all three GPA requirements were met over the 10 courses.
GPA Progression Requirement |

Requirement |
---|---|---|
Bu GPA |

Non-Bu GPA |
6.4 (Illustration Two – 7 courses) |

Greater than 5 |
Determining if a student may progress to the next year of the program:
- For BBA progression students require a 7.0 BU GPA. This GPA is calculated using any courses that begin with a BU, including any BU electives (third and fourth year only). Required courses that do not begin with a BU (e.g. EC120, EC255) are not included in the BU GPA.
- For BBA progression students require a 5.0 Non-BU GPA. This GPA is calculated using any courses that do not begin with a BU, but includes required courses (such as EC120 or MA129), along with electives.
- The overall GPA must also be 5.0.
- Any course with a grade of ‘F’ needs to be included in the GPA calculation unless it has been repeated.
- If a course is repeated then the grade from the second attempt will be included in the GPA calculation, regardless of whether it is higher or lower than the first attempt.
