Welcome to orientation 2020! Graduate Student Orientation is your chance to learn about some of the many resources and services Laurier has to offer the graduate student community. These online sessions will serve as an introduction to some of our staff and faculty.
Registration
After registration is complete, you will be sent a confirmation email with instructions on how to access the sessions you have registered for.
Sessions
To ensure the safety and well-being of all involved, sessions will be held in a virtual online setting through Zoom, with the exception of select pre-recorded videos. Students must use their Laurier Zoom account to access these Zoom sessions. For assistance with setting up your Laurier Zoom account, visit Getting Started with Zoom.

Building Financial Success: Making the Most of Your Funding Opportunities as a Laurier Grad Student
Description
As a graduate student, focusing on your studies should be your top priority - not worrying about how you are going to pay for it! On behalf of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Student Finance, this session will provide an overview of the various funding and employment opportunities available as well as tips and resources on creating a financial plan, so that you can cover the costs associated with being a grad student. Be sure to join us to figure out how to navigate the graduate student financial landscape, so that you can complete your degree – with less financial stress!

EDI in Grad School: Considerations for Research and Practice
Description
As a graduate student, considerations of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are critical to your well-being and research or academic success. This workshop provides an introduction to how EDI can be considered in your grad school experience so that you and your research or academic output are inclusive and equitable of diverse perspectives.

Keeping Relationships on the Rails: Expectations between Supervisors and Graduate Students
Description
The supervisor – graduate student relationship is key to success in graduate school, and sometimes well into your career. Differing expectations between supervisors and students can derail this relationship, but proactive discussions about expectations can help prevent misunderstandings. By attending this remote workshop, you will learn to: articulate how setting expectations can help reduce and prevent conflict, develop strategies for initiating conversations about expectations, and engage in conversations to clarify expectations.

Navigating and Designing your Graduate Student Experience at Laurier
Description

Professional Skills and Development Training – An Introduction to the ASPIRE Program
Description
ASPIRE is Laurier's professional skills and development training program designed for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. At the ASPIRE Fair, you will be introduced to this important program, and have opportunity to engage with ASPIRE partners and learn about their offerings.

Proposal-Writing Workshop (PhD Students)
Description
In this 90-minute workshop, you will develop the tools to write effective scholarship proposals. Working from samples of winning graduate student proposals (from OGS, SSHRC, and NSERC grants), we will examine common features of successful research statements, and you will learn how to apply these writing strategies in your own proposal.
This workshop is targeted to PhD students in all disciplines.
