Ensemble Auditions

Audition Information

Mandatory ensemble auditions take place during Orientation Week (in September) for all Bachelor of Music students. All auditions will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 7 and Thursday, Sept. 8 by instrument grouping, except Jazz Rhythm Section. Jazz Rhythm Section auditions will be on Tuesday, Sept. 13 during the first Jazz Ensemble Rehearsal. Student interested in auditioning for Jazz Rhythm Section should also audition on Sept. 7 for other ensembles to ensure a spot in another ensemble if their Jazz Rhythm Section audition is not successful.

Your audition time (five minutes in length) will be sent to your MyLaurier email in August.

Based on your primary instrument use the listing below to determine audition expectations. All auditions (except for choir) will be blind, meaning you will perform behind a wall or screen for the audition panel, removing footwear and not speaking.

Questions? Contact Kathy Gauci at kgauci@wlu.ca or 519.884.0710 x2956.

Vocalists/Guitarists/Pianists

In all cases students will be auditioning for choir and will need to demonstrate their vocal range. Expect the audition panel to take you through some vocal exercises to explore your range and flexibility.

Prepare one piece that you are comfortable with and know well. If you consider yourself a “non-singer” you will be asked to sing “O Canada.”

Students interested in auditioning for the Rhythm Section of the Jazz Ensemble will still be expected to complete the audition requirements above.

All Other Instrumentalists

An audition excerpt specific to your major instrument is below. You will be expected to prepare all pieces in advance of your audition.
