Instructional Assistant: Tutors and Markers

Year 1 Music Theory

Job Description

Theory Tutors (Year 1: MUAC101/102).  A limited amount of one-on-one or small group tutoring support, to be assigned by the instructor according to specific remedial requirements on a case-by-case basis.

Qualifications

Third- or fourth-year Music students who earned no less than A- in each of MU161, MU162, MU266 and (or equivalent.) Strong interpersonal skills suitable for peer tutoring and a recommendation from a member of the music theory teaching faculty regarding suitability, responsibility, and reliability. Exceptionally strong students in second year may be considered if needed. As this is the first year of a new curriculum, tutors must be willing to learn new skills based on the needs of the expanded curriculum. Preference will be given to students majoring in Music Theory and Music Education, but all applicants shall be considered on the basis of their academic strengths.

Year 2 Music Theory

Job Description

Musical Skills/Musicianship

Job Description

Skills Tutors and Musicianship Tutors (Fall term: MU236; Winter term: MUST102/MU237): conduct group sessions with broad appeal to assist students in the various aspects of the skills/musicianship curricula. Piano facility is required to conduct dictation sessions. Please indicate your level of comfort for playing dictation passages from the piano in your cover letter. A very limited amount of one-on-one tutoring may be available.

Qualifications

Third- or fourth-year Music students. Requirements: a minimum of A- in the course in which they would like to tutor (or in MU137 or MU145B for students who wish to tutor MUST102), strong interpersonal skills suitable for a peer tutoring environment, and a recommendation from a member of the musical skills teaching faculty. Under exceptional circumstances, a second-year student may be considered for first-year classroom assistance.

Marking

Markers (all courses above): Limited marking/grading assistance may be offered to approved Tutors. If you wish to be considered for this work, please let your supervising instructor know.

Rate of Pay: All Tutors

Proctors

Job Description

Invigilate quizzes, tests, exams in the Faculty of Music as needs arise.

Qualifications

2nd, 3rd or 4th year undergraduate music student of exceptional character and integrity. Recommendation of a member of the Music Faculty.

Music Inventory Coordinator (2 positions)

Job Description

  • At least one candidate must be a percussion or drum set major
  • These roles assist with tasks not related to curricular responsibilities
  • Training to take place during the second half of August and during Orientation Week

Duties Include (to be divided between two positions):

  • Create and maintain schedules for lending of concert percussion, drum set and backline equipment
  • Weekly classroom reset
  • Ensure inventory files are up to date
  • Coordinate & organize equipment storage room
  • Coordinate the signing out of equipment to students and curricular activities
  • Coordinate the booking and training of students using the recording studio
  • Move and maintain equipment for external renters and instances outside of regular curricular requirements, including updating inventory files
  • Ensure percussion studio and storage spaces are organized
  • Proactively monitor the condition of Faculty-owned musical instruments and equipment, identifying and reporting any maintenance or repair needs to supervisor in a timely manner

Qualifications

  • Current Faculty of Music student
  • Experience with one of (or all) backline, drum-set, and/or Percussion equipment
  • Demonstrated organization, interpersonal, and time management skills
  • A strong sense of initiative, able to work independently, self-starter
  • Requires lifting up to 25lb

Pianist/Accompanist for MUST100 & MUST101 (up to 5 positions)

Job Description

Pianist/Accompanist to accompany the singing students in MUST100: Foundational Vocal Techniques (Non-Voice Majors) and MUST101: Foundational Vocal Techniques (Voice Majors).

Qualifications

Preference will be given to 4th year piano students, Chamber Diploma Students and students who have completed the accompanying courses. Under exceptional circumstances, a 2nd or 3rd year student may be considered. Strong sight reader with capabilities in multiple genres is required. Recommendation of the Piano Faculty.

Rate of Pay

  • $26/hour for third-year undergraduate
  • $28.64/hour for fourth- or fifth-year undergraduate

Number of Hours

Approximately 20-30h total. Class times are:
Tues/Thurs 8:30 a.m. to 9:20 a.m.
Tues/Thurs 9:30 a.m. to 10:20 a.m.
Tues/Thurs 10:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m.

Accompanists must be available during class times for the section they are accompanying.

Accompanist for Laurier Choirs (up to 2 positions)

Job Description

Rehearsal pianist to accompany choral ensembles and coach unaccompanied singing during rehearsals. May also include accompanying during performances.

Qualifications

  • Open score reading
  • Strong sight reading skills
  • Ability to extract and play parts

Rate of pay

  • $26/hour for third year undergraduate
  • $28.64/hour for fourth or fifth year undergraduate

Number of Hours

  • 3-6 hours a week
  • Must be available for ensemble rehearsals:
    • Concert Choir: Mondays and Wednesdays 4 p.m. to 5:20 p.m.
    • Laurier Singers: Mondays and Wednesdays 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m.
  • May require meetings with the ensemble director at a mutually agreeable time for coaching
  • Start date: September 8, 2025

Student Technician

Both music and non-music students may apply to work as student technicians in the Faculty of Music theatres. If you are interested in applying, please email LJ Sherratt with a resume and cover letter. The first round of hiring takes place in October. A second round may occur in January depending on staffing needs. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, but applicants may not receive a response until the following hiring period.

Job Description

  • Assist with the setup, running and tear downs of concerts put on by the Faculty of Music and others
  • May also assist with inventory, access, routine maintenance, housekeeping, and special projects around the Savvas Chamberlain Music Building

Qualifications

  • Must be able to lift equipment & furniture weighing up to 25lbs
  • Prior experience in stage management and experience with theatre preferred but training will be provided
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • In the event of an emergency, directs performer movement and behaviour to ensure safety for all
  • Must successfully complete provided on-the-job training

Number of Hours

  • 2-15h/week, depending on concert volume during the season
  • Off-peak months: September, December, January
  • On-peak months: November, March, April
  • Work is also available during the summer

Usher

Both music and non-music students may apply to work as ushers in the Faculty of Music theatres. The usher position is posted on Navigator in either October or February. Please keep an eye on Navigator during this time. If you have questions about the job description, you may contact Maria Kouznetsova. Job Description

  • Greets patrons and assists them in finding their seats
  • Assists guests with locating exits and amenities such as restrooms, coat check, and concession
  • Assists guests with limited mobility or other accessibility needs with accommodations such as advance seating and Listening Assist
  • Ensures that aisles, walkways, and designated seating areas are clear, clean, and safe
  • Enforces venue policies
  • Assists guests with complaints and escalates to supervisor as needed
  • In the event of an emergency, assists in managing patron movement to a safe location
  • Notifies supervisor of any problems with facilities, supplies, and venue
  • Runs coat check at events where a coat check is available
  • Other concert-related duties as assigned by supervisor

  • Physical requirements:
    • Prolonged periods of standing
    • Prolonged periods of sitting
  • Skills:
    • Excellent communication and customer service skills
    • Consistent professional and neat presentation and friendly demeanor
    • Ability to manage crowds and remain calm in stressful situations
    • Must successfully complete provided on-the-job training
