Program Requirements

Note: University regulations apply to all students at Laurier. If there is any discrepancy between the program or progression requirements outlined on this page and those in the university's academic calendars, the academic calendars are the official sources of information. The information below is from the latest calendar, and you may be following progression requirements from an earlier calendar. Students are responsible for checking the appropriate calendar. Contact your program coordinator should you notice any discrepancies.

Honours BSc Health Sciences (Students Starting 2020 or Later)

The Honours BSc Health Sciences program consists of 20.0 credits, of which at most 7.0 credits may be at the 100-level and no more than 4.5 credits may be from disciplines outside the Faculty of Science. Electives must include at least a 0.5 credit from each of English and Philosophy. At least 2.0 credits must be from 400-level courses. At least 1.5 credits must be from 300- or 400-level optional HE credits in addition to HE300, HE301, and HE400. For progression and graduation, a cumulative overall GPA of at least 6.0 is required.

Year 1 (5.0 credits)

  • HE100, HE101, BI110, BI111, CH110, CH111; PS101 and PS102; MA100;
  • 0.5 elective credit (Refer to Notes 1 and 2) 

Year 2 (5.0 credits)

  • HE201, HE202, HN204, HN220/KP222;
  • CH202, ST231; BI236;
  • 0.5 senior PS credit (Refer to Note 4)
  • At most 1.0 elective credits (Refer to Notes 2 and 3).

Year 3 (5.0 credits)

  • HE300/KP434, HE301, HE303, HE304, HE330;
  • 2.5 elective credits (Refer to Note 3)

Year 4 (5.0 credits)

  • HE400;
  • 2.0 credits selected from: HE410, HE411, HE430, HE431, HE432, HE435, HE440, HE450, HE490*;
  • 2.5 elective credits (see Notes)

Notes

  1. Students working towards applying to professional programs (e.g. medicine, dental school, pharmacy, etc.) in the future and/or are interested in writing the MCAT, DAT, or OAT are highly recommended to take MA101, MA104, PC141(or PC131), and PC142 (or PC132) among their electives. Consult the relevant degree program or the HE Undergraduate Academic Advisor for future guidance.
  2. 0.5 credit in English and 0.5 credit in Philosophy are required. These can be taken in elective slots available in years 1, 2, 3, or 4. English is recommended in year 1 and Philosophy in years 2, 3, and 4. 
  3. For students working towards applying to a professional program (e.g. medicine, dental school, pharmacy, etc.), CH203 and CH250 are highly recommended.
  4. Students must select 0.5 credit from one of the following psychology courses to satisfy this requirement (PS263, PS268, PS270, PS280, PS282, PS285, PS275, PS276, PS377).
  5. Depending on career objectives, students may wish to concentrate their electives in order to qualify for a Minor or Option as part of the Health Sciences BSc. In particular, with one additional senior BI course, students will qualify for a Minor in Biology. Students wishing to obtain a Minor or Option in a discipline other than Biology, particularly if it is offered by a department outside of the Faculty of Sciences, should discuss their plans well in advance with the HE Undergraduate Academic Advisor.

Co-op and Management Options

Students enrolled in the Health Sciences program may apply for the Co-op and Management Options.

Co-op

Co-op provides an opportunity for students to integrate their academic studies with work experience in participating organizations. Admission to this limited enrolment program is competitive and is based on academic record, recent work and volunteer experience, extracurricular activities and interview performance. Science co-op students normally complete two work terms of at least 10 weeks each, usually in the summers following their second and third years.

Management

The Management Option provides fundamental training in key areas of business such as the theories and process of management, marketing, finance, accounting, organizational behaviour, microeconomics and macroeconomics.

Students may be admitted to Health Sciences with the Management Option or may register for the Management Option at the end of their first or second year.
