Faculty of Arts Direct Entry to Co-op FAQ

    Print | PDF

When will I be admitted to the co-op program?

You will be granted admission to co-op in the fall of your second year if you have:

    • Completed at least 5.0 and no more than 7.5 credits
    • Achieved an overall first year GPA of at least 10.5
    • Completed the Career Development and Experiential Learning Certificate

How is my first year GPA calculated?

Your overall GPA includes all the courses you completed at Laurier in the fall and winter terms of your first year (5.0 credits in total).  We will only consider courses taken in the spring term if they are courses you repeated, or courses required to reach 5.0 credits.

What happens to my co-op eligibility if I do not achieve the required 10.5 minimum first year GPA?

If you do not achieve the minimum GPA required for automatic entry to co-op, you have the option to apply through the competitive admission process for Arts Co-op.  Please refer to information about application review and process for non-direct entry to Arts co-op here.

What do I have to do to complete the Career Development and Experiential Learning Certificate?

    • You are required to complete the certificate in the winter of your first year and the Laurier Career Development Centre will contact you during the fall term with registration information.

What if I don’t complete 5.0 credits by the end of the spring term of first year?

    • Students must complete at least 5.0 credits by the end of the spring term of first year or are not eligible for admission to co-op.

What if I transfer to a different program?

    • If you transfer to a different program within the Faculty of Arts that also offers co-op, you may be eligible for direct entry into co-op if you are still entering Year 2 in the fall of your new program. You will need to confirm with an academic advisor.
    • If you transfer to a program outside of the Faculty of Arts, you will no longer be eligible for direct entry into co-op. Please review the admission process for your new program.

When do I get enrolled in COOP000 - Fundamentals of Co-operative Education course?

    • If you are admitted to co-op, you will be automatically enrolled in the co-op fundamentals course in fall of second year.
