TriAGe: Preparation for University Calculus

A refresher of material covered in the Grade 12 Advanced Functions course, TriAGe helps prepare students who plan to enrol in an entry-level university calculus course by reinforcing fundamental skills in Trigonometry, Algebra and Geometry. Review and deepen your understanding of core concepts to build a strong foundation and increase your chances of success in calculus!

Topics that will be discussed include:

  • Algebraic manipulations used to simplify expressions and solve equations and inequalities.
  • Analytic geometry.
  • Polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions.

We will also discuss specific learning strategies to help you with the transition from high school mathematics to university expectations.

A final assessment will be provided at the end of the course to students who complete a set of assignments and an end-of-course evaluation.

Registration opens May 1, 2020.

Summer Session Information

  • Instructor: Tina Balfour (BA, BEd), manager of Mathematics and Statistic Learning Support
  • Course cost: $295

Online Session

All students will start with the online session of TriAGe. Access to the course material will begin on June 22, 2020. You will then work through the course at your own pace, but you should have a goal to complete the course by the date of the final evaluation (we suggest you give yourself at least four weeks to complete the online version of TriAGe).

On-Campus Classes

Students who may be struggling to complete the course material independently, or who would like some extra face-to-face instruction, are welcome to join on-campus classes for TriAGe in August 2020.

  • Location: Laurier's Waterloo campus
  • Class times: 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with a 15-minute break
  • Class dates: Mondays and Tuesdays, Aug. 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25

For those students who take the course over the Fall or Winter terms, weekly on campus classes can be scheduled if there is enough interest.

There is no additional fee to attend any of the on campus classes.

Final Evaluation

The final evaluation for the summer session will take place on Friday, Aug. 28, 2020, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be an optional review tutorial the day of the final evaluation, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Additional final evaluation dates for those taking TriAGe over the Fall or Winter terms will be scheduled at a later dater (according to student availability).

The Department of Mathematics at Laurier is permitting successful completion of the TriAGe course to be considered as an equivalency to the Grade 12 Advanced Functions prerequisite for MA100, MA102 and MA129. To be granted the equivalency, a final grade of 70% or better must be attained through completion of course assignments and the final evaluation. The equivalency cannot be used directly towards program admission requirements.

Registration Process

Payment by credit card/debit must be made at the time of registration.

Registrations will be accepted May 1, 2020 through to Feb. 15, 2021, and are open to both Laurier and non-Laurier students.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

If you need to cancel your registration and have not accessed the course, contact Tina Balfour to request a refund; a $25 administrative fee will apply.

Registration fees cannot be refunded once you have accessed the course on MyLearningSpace or have attended one of the on-campus classes.
