Netiquette in Remote Learning

We are committed to providing a living and learning environment that promotes student success inside and outside of the classroom. The Dean of Students Office would like to remind all students that Laurier’s Non-Academic Student Code of Conduct also applies to online communication. We are committed to ensuring a respectful and engaging online and remote community.

The rules for remote and online learning and classroom learning are virtually the same: You have to study, take notes, attend classes and participate in discussions. In the classroom, your words, gestures, posture, and facial expressions communicate your thoughts and observations to your classmates and teachers. So how can you express yourself respectfully and effectively online?

Ground Rules for the Virtual Classroom

1. Be Respectful and Professional 
If it's not acceptable face-to-face, it's not acceptable online.

2. Practise Live Lecture Etiquette
A live lecture is a professional environment.

3. Master Chat Etiquette 
Online chats provide an opportunity to ask questions or make comments about the content under discussion, not a place to arrange social engagements with friends.

4. Stand Up Against Cyberbullying 
It has serious consequences. Laurier does not tolerate cyberbulling – any online behaviour that is abusive, cruel, harassing, inappropriate or threatening.

5. Take it Seriously 
Be on your best behaviour.
