Allyson (Ally) Buchanan successfully graduated from Laurier in 2022 as a pioneer among students completing a BA in Political Science from Laurier, coupled with an LLB Bachelor of Law from the University of Sussex. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic on her international learning experience, Ally actively engaged in both the Laurier and Sussex communities. Her time at the University of Sussex was marked by participation in the Canadian Student Law Society and the Junior Mooting Competition, where the pandemic played a pivotal role in shaping her experience. As Ally reflects on her international learning experience, she has no regrets and speaks highly of it.

Throughout her tenure at Laurier, Ally served on the 'House Council.' In her second year, she was a founding member of APSS - Sussex, which evolved into the Sussex Association at Laurier. Reflecting on her extracurricular involvement, she emphasizes the practical skills acquired, which she now finds invaluable in her day-to-day life. Ally underscores the importance of striking a work-life balance and advising others to actively participate in their school communities while maintaining a healthy equilibrium.

Upon returning to Laurier for a sixth year to complete her BA, Ally delved into the workforce, shedding light on the unique challenges of navigating post-law school life. Laurier's comprehensive preparation for the NCA exams, including specialized courses and guidance from successful individuals, proved instrumental in easing the transition. However, Ally recognized the need for pre-emptive networking, particularly in a competitive field like law. As she sought articling positions, Ally acknowledged that her international and dual-degree background presented novel challenges, highlighting the importance of strategic networking to overcome these hurdles.

Presently, Ally works at a mid-sized law firm in Hamilton. She is a member of the Hamilton Law Association and volunteers her time to be a part of the New Lawyer's Subcommittee which caters to new lawyers. Despite her busy schedule, she enthusiastically discussed her role in insurance defense law, managing cases involving car accidents and insurance disputes. Ally's daily routine involves a mix of email correspondence, coordination with the counsel and clients, discussions with senior partners, and occasional court appearances to advocate for clients, making her days dynamic and challenging.

Ally's weekday routines have the potential to be dynamic and can vary and adapt over time. Monday starting at 8:30 a.m. with settling in and coffee, followed by inbox organization and collaboration with her assistant to serve and file court documents. Drafting assignments for partners takes up her morning while her afternoons are spent preparing for consultations and assorted tasks. Due to interruptions, her days may extend until 6 p.m. Tuesdays involve partner-client calls, internal meetings and rehearsals for a play in the evening. Wednesdays are packed with virtual court appearances, association meetings and meeting deadlines for partner assignments and court submissions. Despite the challenges, she reports being able to adeptly manage her workload and maintain a high level of productivity throughout the week.

In offering advice to aspiring legal professionals, Ally underscores the importance of cultivating essential skills. Time management, organizational proficiency and strong interpersonal capabilities are, according to her, key to success in the demanding field of law. Acknowledging the demanding nature of a legal career, she encourages aspiring legal professionals to immerse themselves in these skills to enhance their prospects in this competitive and challenging field. Her journey, marked by academic accomplishments, community engagement and professional resilience, serves as an inspiration to those navigating the intricate pathways of a legal career.
