Rapid call for student research training award
Mitacs has recently issued a rapid call for the Mitacs Research Training Award. The award will provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to undertake a short-term, paid research training internship under the supervision of a faculty member. The award is valued at $6,000.
To be eligible, research projects must be designed and led by students. Projects must be conducted in a remote working environment and cannot involve face-to-face interactions. They must run for 12 to 16 weeks between June and September 2020. See further details below.
Laurier will be restricted in the number of applications we can submit to Mitacs. If demand exceeds the number of applications we are permitted to forward, applications will be adjudicated internally by the Office of Research Services. They will be assessed on:
a) how the award will benefit the student’s academic studies and research career; and
b) the potential of the project and research activities to contribute to industry, the not-for-profit community, society, and/or Canada.
To apply, please contact your supervisor. Your supervisor can reach out to mwymanmccarthy@wlu.ca to request an application form. Applications must be completed and submitted by Monday, May 18, 2020.
Mitacs Research Training Award
Overview
In partnership with member universities, Mitacs is launching the Mitacs Research Training Award. The award will provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to undertake a short-term paid research training internship at a Canadian host institution. Students receive an opportunity to enhance their skills through interaction with faculty and hands-on research and training experience; projects must begin by August 31, 2020.
The primary goals of the program are to:
- Enable students to develop connections/collaborations with PSE faculty members/researchers
- Provide students with hands-on research and training experience
- Build students’ research skills, project management skills and subject / technical knowledge
- Increase awareness of potential educational and career pathways for students
- Identify new research connections or directions, potential for further collaboration, or project continuation through other Mitacs programming
Program Model
- Projects designed and led by students
- The award will provide a grant of $6,000 per student toward student stipend, with 50/50 matching with the host institution ($3,000 from the host institution and $3,000 from Mitacs)
- The award will cover research projects of 12–16 weeks duration
- Each project will require supervision to oversee the work and the student
- Students are expected to meet weekly with their supervisor to report on the progress of their project — virtual meetings are acceptable
- Students are required to submit mid-term and final reports to the university
- Both students and supervisors will be required to complete a Mitacs exit survey at the end of the program reporting on skills developed and providing feedback on the program experience
- Projects will be reviewed by the host institution prior to submission to Mitacs
- Projects submitted to Mitacs will then be evaluated internally to confirm eligibility for the program (eligibility requirements below)
- Students must complete a final report and deliver a final presentation summarizing the work that was completed to their supervisor during the last week of the award term
- Supplemental online training will be provided to the students
