Laurier condemns street parties

Wilfrid Laurier University strongly condemns the kind of street party that occurred on Ezra Avenue late Sept. 2 and early Sept. 3 near the university’s Waterloo campus.

Such events cause significant damage to the university’s reputation, which negatively affects students, alumni, faculty, staff and the community.

Street parties are a growing phenomenon in university communities across Ontario. They are dangerous for those who attend, as well as for the police, special constables and emergency responders who are frequently required to assist individual participants.

Laurier will continue to work with the Mayor of Waterloo’s Task Force, our community partners and our student leaders to change the culture that gives rise to street parties. The university will also review the behavior of any Laurier student accused of breaking the law, and will apply sanctions as appropriate under the university’s Non-Academic Student Code of Conduct.

All of us in the Laurier community need to take responsibility for bringing this phenomenon to an end and making Laurier known for its academic excellence and respectful community spirit.
