One instructional assistant (IA) is required for HE304: Introduction to Indigenous Health and Wellbeing (Winter/2021 term).  This course is intended to engage and advance students’ knowledge, awareness, and understanding in the area of Indigenous Peoples’ health. Students will learn about health inequities that face First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in rural and urban contexts across Canada. Students will critically examine how a) health status is measured; b) historical and current colonial practices are linked to determinants of Indigenous People’s health; and c) cultural safety, cultural humility, and cultural continuity are crucial to addressing health inequities. Students will be exposed to differences in health issues, access to care, and systemic challenges between Indigenous people in different regions and contexts across Canada. Students will learn about promising approaches and strengths-based practices that people are using in health practices, research, policies, and programming. Students will learn from several guest speakers who are Indigenous and/or work in Indigenous health-related fields. Students will need to read assigned readings to meaningfully participate and learn in this course.

 

Duties

The IA will assist in:

  • answering student emails
  • aiding students in learning the course materials
  • proctoring examinations and
  • grading assignments and examinations

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidates will have a passion for the subject area, be excellent communicators, and demonstrate strong leadership skills in facilitating learning objectives. Clear evidence of having studied and learned (e.g. self-guided) about Indigenous Peoples of Canada is required. An example of this may be a certificate from taking the MOOC course “Indigenous Canada”.

 

Hours of work

A total of 65 hours to be worked between January 11, 2021 – April 30, 2021.

 

Rate of pay

$21.70/hour when fourth-year undergraduate

$20.60/hour when third-year undergraduate
