MA307A: Numerical Analysis (Fall 2018)

Calendar Description

Numerical solution of equations and systems of equations; numerical integration; methods of interpolation, extrapolation and curve-fitting, error analysis. Methods will be illustrated by exercises requiring the use of a computer.

Prerequisites

MA122, MA104, MA201, MA205 and CP104.

Exclusions

CP315, MA371, PC315.

Numerical Methods Using Matlab, 4th Edition, John Mathews and Kurtis Fink, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2004.

Calculators

Students may only use the approved scientific calculator, Casio FX-300MS Plus, on lab assignments, the midterm test and the final examination. No other calculator is allowed. It is available for purchase at the campus bookstore.

Evaluation

A final mark out of 100 will be calculated as follows:

  • Laboratories: 20%
  • Midterm Exam (Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, during class time, held in the Theatre Auditorium): 30%
  • Final Examination (2.5 hours; exact date, time and location to be announced): 50%

The final mark will be reported as a letter grade in accordance with the conversion table of the current undergraduate calendar.
