ST259A: Probability I (Fall 2018)

Calendar Description

Elementary probability theory; conditional probability and independence; discrete and continuous random variables; expected value, variance, covariance and correlation; introduction to Moment Generating Functions; the Law of Large Numbers and the Central Limit Theorem.

Prerequisites

MA104, or (one of MA101, MA103, MA110*, and either MA121 or MA122).

MA240.

Evaluation

A final mark out of 100 will be calculated as follows:

  • WebWorK Assignments (One every other week): 10%
  • Laboratories (One every other week): 20%
  • Midterm Exam Test 1 (Monday, Oct. 22, in LH3094 and LH2066, 80 minutes): 15%
  • Midterm Exam Test 2 (Monday, Nov. 26, in LH3094 and LH2066, 80 minutes): 20%
  • Final Examination (comprehensive) (2.5 hours, exact date, time and location to be announced): 35%

No exemption from the final examination will be granted. In addition to achieving a percentage grade of at least 50%, a minimum grade of 40% on the final examination is necessary to pass the course. The final mark will be reported as a letter grade in accordance with the conversion table of the current undergraduate calendar.
