#Ride the Wave: Workshops for Wellness and Well-Being

Learn to ride the waves of student life with our skill-building workshops designed to offer practical tips for increasing resiliance, managing stress and anxiety, and developing skills to cope with the turbulence of student life.  Don't sink or swim: ride the wave!  Topics for this semester include mindfulness and meditation, distress tolerance, depression, and anxiety.

Drop in to the Wellness Centre Boardroom (formerly the Student Health and Development Centre) Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 11:00 a.m.  No need to register.  Just drop in, and maybe bring a friend.

Schedule of Workshops:

January 17 / 19: Before You Get in the Water (grounding and mindfulness)

Learn strategies to increase your self-awareness and focus on the present moment. This workshop teaches skills that are great for daily practice and that will help you cope when you’re feeling stressed.

January 24 / 26: Ride the Wave (meditation)

Mindfulness can help reduce rumination and over-thinking to reduce stress and anxiety. In this workshop, you will learn about mindfulness and participate in an introductory meditation exercise.

January 31 / February 7: Moving Beyond Tidal Waves (distress tolerance)

Sometimes the waves are huge or just won’t stop crashing. This workshop offers simple but effective strategies to help you manage and get through difficult times.

February 2 / 9: Ripple Effects (body image)

Learn more about the connections and interactions between body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem and eating disorders. This workshop is also useful if you are concerned about a friend.

Note: on February 9, we will meet in the Hawk Lounge in the Athletics Complex at 11:00 a.m. as part of #InvestInYourself

February 14: Navigating the Storm (depression)

This workshop provides helpful information about depression as well as tips for managing stormy weather. It offers practical ways of dealing with depression and ideas on how to support a friend who is low.  Please note that the Thursday section of this workshop has been cancelled.

February 21 / 23: Reading Week

February 28 / March 2: Ready, Set, Compete (exam anxiety)

Every surfer needs to practice before they compete. Learn ways to handle performance anxiety, improve your mental game, and find inner calm during midterms and exams.

March 7 / 9: Waves Ebb and Flow (emotional regulation)

Join us to talk about strategies to increase resilience, awareness, and emotional control.

March 14 / 16: Finding Calm in Choppy Water (anxiety)

Learn to manage anxiety during stressful times and to manage the stresses of student life.

March 23: Navigating the Storm (depression)

Please note that the March 21 session has been cancelled.

March 28 / 30: Enjoy the Water (gratitude)

Gratitude and creative activities help you recharge during busy times. Take some time for yourself, and join us for a creative activity that is focused on gratitude.

April 4: Ready, Set, Compete (exam anxiety)
