Exercise Ideas During Isolation

We all know that exercise is good for us, but during times of low activity and social isolation it becomes even more important. Most people will experience lower moods and higher levels of anxiety during this time of social distancing. Daily exercise, whether it’s a short activity or a more intense workout, is one important way to take care of your physical and mental health during stressful times.
Benefits of Exercise
- Relief of tension and stress
- Release of endorphins also known as the “feel good” hormones.
- Increased self-esteem through feeling and being fit, being active, accomplishing goals.
Improved sleep: exercise regulates circadian rhythms (it’s not recommended to exercise just before bed) - Boosts creativity and mental energy
- If done outdoors, improves oxygen flow and access to Vitamin D (sunshine)
- Can reduce muscle ache and tension from inactivity.
- Can strengthen your immune system
Exercise Ideas When You Can't Go Outside
- The YMCA is offering free online exercise class videos that vary in level of difficulty, including yoga, bootcamp, weightlifting, barre, and tai chi;
- Laurier Athletics is offering live fitness classes on ZOOM, or follow them on Facebook
- Search videos on YouTube, such as "Reunite-Yoga with Adriene August 2019 playlist" (31 guided exercise sessions focused on various topics), "30 minute Bodyweight Workout POPSUGAR fitness (no weights required)
- Jumping jacks, plank variations, push-ups, weight free lunges, body-weight squats, muscle stretches and DANCE to your favorite music.
Outdoor Exercise Options
Run, speed walk, regular walk, bike, rollerblade, scooter, hike, jump rope, garden. Remember to only do these if you are healthy and free of symptoms and have the space to practice social distancing.
Remember that making time to get moving every day is one of the best ways to elevate your mood and release stress and anxiety!
