Now Hiring: Student Teaching Development Facilitator
Are you an undergraduate student at Laurier who is interested in contributing to student teaching development? We are now hiring an undergraduate student as a Student Teaching Development Facilitator (STDF) for the 2020-2021 academic year!
The STDF plays a key role in supporting the professional development of undergraduate students at Laurier, specifically related to teaching professional development. This position reports to, and works closely with, the Educational Developer responsible for student teaching development. The STDF will work as part of a team with the Graduate Teaching Developers.
What type of work does an STDF do?
Undergraduate Teaching Certificate Support
- Co-facilitate microteaching sessions
- Co-facilitate teaching development workshops
- Read and maintain currency in literature related to higher education and scholarship of teaching and learning
- Assist with the development and redevelopment of workshops to reflect current literature in higher education
- Collect and collate midterm feedback for fellow Laurier students from the students in their classrooms
- Contribute to teaching resources created by Teaching & Learning for undergraduates students, graduate students, TAs, and IAs
Communications and Administration
- Engage in community outreach regarding professional development available to Laurier undergraduate and graduate students who wish to improve and refine their teaching skills, in particular TAs and IAs
- Liaise and collaborate with the Graduate Students’ Association, Students’ Union, other Academic Support Units, the student population, and other stakeholder groups regarding teaching development opportunities for Laurier students
- Meet with the Educational Developer responsible for student teaching development at regularly scheduled team meetings and others as required
- Additional tasks as requested
The rate for this position is $20/hour (including 4% vacation) for an average commitment of 5 hours per week from late-August 2020 to March 2021 (start and end dates are flexible). Exact duties and hours will be determined in consultation with the Educational Developer responsible for student teaching development.
WHAT ARE THE POSITION REQUIREMENTS?
- Registered in the third year of an undergraduate program at Laurier
- Completion of the Foundations in Teaching & Learning certificate
- Demonstrated interest in supporting student learning and ability to work with a wide range of colleagues in a professional and respectful manner
- Previous work experience related to teaching is an asset (e.g., IA, community outreach, mentoring, etc.)
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills
- Ability to provide constructive oral and written feedback
- Working knowledge of Word, Excel, email, social media, etc.
- Leadership or mentorship experience considered an asset
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a functional team
