The HR-261 Multiculturalism class has really opened my mind and heart for me to better see my purpose in life, and the path to get there. This class has allowed me to better express myself on paper and learn about other diverse people inside the classroom and around the world.
One of the amazing opportunities we had in the classroom was working within a group setting with two international student volunteers from Peru and China. We were able to get to know them and they got to know us while we worked as a team to complete weekly exercises and reflections, making this experience to be very rewarding and fulfilling.
I have also learned so much about the history of Multiculturalism in Canada and around the world through the lectures, research, and critical analysis. I have really found the TED talk videos shared during class and the guest speakers that came to visit our class very inspiring, because they have walked their own journeys in life and many of them are on a mission to bring change that includes using their own voice to help and inspire others.
The lectures we had on white supremacy and posters we created allowed me to set my anger aside and think outside the box. It was wonderful to observe other classmates create posters and see how they felt about the topic themselves.
I was also given the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience of being born into a generation that sustained intergenerational trauma from the 60’s scoop and residential school system. I also shared my ancestors’ stories of their journey through the Underground Railroad while they sought a better life for themselves here in Canada. It has also allowed me to explore my creative side and show the artistic side of who I am in addition to giving me the confidence to express myself and get out my comfort zone and work better in a team environment.
In summary, HR-261 Multiculturalism has also allowed me to look ahead where I can now see my dream of becoming an advocate come to life. I will bring change to our diverse community and world and be that much needed voice for those who can’t speak for themselves!
