Launch of Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom Task Force

    Sept. 26, 2024
    Print | PDF

    Dear students,

At Wilfrid Laurier University, we are deeply committed to academic freedom, freedom of expression, and fostering an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome to engage in research, teaching and learning. This is clearly articulated in our Statement on Freedom of Expression and upheld through our freedom of expression policy framework.

In the more than five years since our freedom of expression statement and free speech policy framework were developed, it has become clear that we need further clarity regarding policies, procedures, and how we address community concerns.

To that end, we are establishing a Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom Task Force to identify and examine challenges of implementation within the current framework and identify resources and processes necessary for supporting free expression and academic freedom at the university.

Over the coming months, the task force will engage in consultations with staff, faculty and students, and will consult with external experts to gather a wide range of perspectives on how freedom of expression and academic freedom are being upheld and where improvements can be made. The task force will report its recommendations to Senate in May.

Please visit the webpage for specific information about the membership of the task force, call for nominations, and timing of the task force’s work.

I am keen to engage with the university community on these important issues. I look forward to input from the community as we embark on this work.

    Best regards,

    Heidi Northwood, PhD
