Undergraduate Awards

The Joan Heimbecker Award

This award is presented annually to the graduating Honours Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE) student with the highest overall four-year academic average. This award is typically presented to the recipient at the post-convocation gathering on graduation day (spring). The recipient’s name is engraved on a plaque which is displayed in the KPE office reception area.

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology Award

This award is provided by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) to each Canadian university with a Kinesiology (or equivalent) undergraduate program and is awarded annually to the top student in exercise physiology-related courses. The award consists of a CSEP medallion and commemorative certificate. Both of these items are presented at the post-convocation gathering on graduation day (spring). The recipient’s name is engraved on plaque which is displayed on the KPE office reception area.

Neil Widmeyer Sport Psychology Award

Awarded to the KIN student who best combines achievement in Sport and Exercise Psychology courses, sport involvement within and/or external to WLU, and a commitment to collaborate with and help others. Laurier Bookstore gift certificate. Value: $100.  Eligibility: 3rd or 4th year KIN undergrads

Criteria:

  1. Complete a minimum of two sport and exercise psychology focused courses in the Department of Kinesiology.
  2. Strong GPA within these sport psychology courses as well as overall GPA
  3. Sport involvement (e.g., participant, coach, volunteer, etc.) within and/or external to WLU
  4. Strong communication skills and demonstrated abilities to collaborate with peers
  5. Commitment to help others meet potential.

Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism (APNM) Undergraduate  Research Excellence Award

This award recognizes one outstanding senior undergraduate student on an annual basis.  It is open to senior undergraduate students enrolled in exercise science and nutrition major programs at participating Canadian universities and colleges.  The award aims to recognize excellence in up-and-coming Canadian researchers, in order to encourage quality students to read contemporary science and to stay involved in the field.  Recipients receive a certificate and a one-year electronic subscription to Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism through Canadian Science Publishing.  The recipient's name is engraved on the plaque displayed in the KPE hallway.  The award is presented at the convocation ceremony in June

The Sandy Young Award

This award is awarded to the student who best combines achievement and enthusiasm in Canadian sport history. The recipient’s name is engraved on the plaque displayed in the KPE hallway. The award is presented at the Laurier Kin Kouncil Meet and Greet event in early fall.

Student Funding Support

The Faculty of Science Students’ Association (FOSSA) provides students access to resources, including funding of up to $300 per person per academic year. Contact FOSSA for more information.

As well, FOSSA provides support to nine clubs on campus, including our very own Kin Kouncil.
