Leadership Experience Placements
In an effort to promote the value of hands-on and co-curricular learning, all undergraduate Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE) students complete a minimum of 96 hours of community leadership activity experiences as a graduation requirement.
These experiences will engage you in a leadership, administrative, instructional or service capacity related to the wide scope of kinesiology, physical activity, recreation, or applied health.
Our department regularly posts leadership opportunities, including coaching, athletic therapy and physiotherapy to both MyLearningSpace (MyLS) and the bulletin board in the main KPE office area (BA501).
Leadership Policy, Mandatory Training and Procedures
- KPE Undergraduate Advisor must pre-approve all leadership experiences; experiences initiated without prior approval will be disqualified.
- Leadership experience proposals must be submitted for pre-approval using Navigator. Students will know that their proposal is approved when the 'placement record' step changes colour from blue to green.
- Mandatory training needs to be completed prior to initiating a placement proposal.
- Between 2 and 4 placements are required.
- Minimum 16 hours per placement; maximum 80 hours per placement.
- Students may not perform placements where they will be supervised by relatives or fellow undergraduate students.
- Students must submit their hours to their supervisors for approval using Navigator.
Please direct all leadership experience enquiries to kinleadership@wlu.ca.
Placement Type Training
Students must complete training prior to initiating their leadership activity proposals, and will be required to upload their training certificates on Navigator**. It is the student’s responsibility to verify that they complete the correct training required by the type of placement they are performing:
All Placements with Laurier
- Young Workers Health and Safety Orientation (Online, 1 hour)
- Young Workers Health and Safety Orientation Part II (in class, 1 hour)**
Paid Placements Outside Laurier
- Young Workers Health and Safety Orientation (Online, 1 hour)
Unpaid Placements Outside Laurier
- Unpaid Work Placement Health and Safety Orientation (Online, 1 hour)
**Students will provide the date they completed Part II training as no certificate is currently available. KPE will use this date to confirm the student's attendance.
After Training
Following completion of online training, students performing experiences at Laurier are also required to complete an in-class training session. These sessions are offered by Laurier's Safety, Health, Environment and Risk Management department (SHERM).
All online training courses are available through MyLearningSpace via the Self Registration link in the top left corner.
Students will use Navigator to manage all aspects of their Kinesiology Leadership Experiences. See below links for step-by-step video instructions on:
