    Calendar Description

    Determinants; Cayley-Hamilton theorem; bilinear forms; adjoint, self-adjoint, and normal linear operators; the spectral theorem for normal operators; orthogonal and Hermitian operators; the Jordan canonical form of matrices and linear operators.

    Tuesday and Thursday 2:30 p.m. - 3:50 p.m. in P119 (Peters Building)

    Textbook

    Linear Algebra, 4th or 5th Edition, by Friedberg, Insel and Spence, Prentice-Hall.
    (Note: The bookstore sells the loose leaf version of the 5th Edition)

     

    MyLearningSpace

    MyLearningSpace (MyLS): Instructional materials (video lectures and accompanying lecture
    notes) and important course information will all be posted on MyLS. Students are expected
    to visit MyLearningSpace regularly for instructional materials, updates and/or
    announcements, and information on tests and exam

    Evaluation

    A final mark out of 100 will be calculated as follows:

    • Assignments: 40%
    • Midterm Test (Wednesday, October 28th, 1:00-2:20 p.m.): 20%
    • Final Exam (2.5 hours; exact date, time and location to be announced): 40%

    Students must achieve a score of at least 40% of the marks available on the final examination to be eligible to pass the course. The final mark will be reported as a letter grade in accordance with the conversion table of the current undergraduate calendar.
