Webinar Presented By: Distinguished Professor Emerita Mary E. Thompson, Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, University of Waterloo
Speaker Bio: Mary E. Thompson holds the title of Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of Waterloo, where she has been a member of the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science since 1969. Her areas of interest include statistical estimation theory, inference for stochastic processes, biostatistics and survey methods. She is a past member of Statistics Canada’s Advisory Committee on Statistical Methods. At Waterloo she was co-founder of the Survey Research Centre in 1999. Since 2002 she has served as the lead statistician for the cross-disciplinary International Tobacco Control Project.
Abstract: This presentation will discuss, with examples, roles of survey methodology in data science for research, including: the estimation of prevalences; the combination of survey data with data from new and traditional sources; the complementary roles of longitudinal and cross-sectional survey data; and the design of surveys to support causal inference.
