Enhance your money management skills and confidence by earning your Dollars and Sense Money Management Certificate remotely on My Learning Space.
This non-credit certificate is based on four foundational components of financial knowledge:
- Budgeting
- Credit
- Investing
- Financial Planning
Each asynchronous module is designed to allow participants to engage and apply material through activities and reflection.
You are required to complete all four core modules to successfully earn the certificate and recieve Laurier Experience Record credit.

The Budgeting basics module teaches you about the fundamentals of budgeting and examines how your perceptions, values, and goals affect the way you develop and follow a budget. In this module you will learn about your internal drivers, your current financial situation, and leave with a personal spending plan that accurately reflects your values and needs.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the Budgeting Basics module, you will be able to:
- Explain how personal spending habits are established by distinguishing needs from wants.
- Sort expenses by differentiating between fixed and variable costs.
- Identify forms of income to determine your personal funding sources
- Calculate net income by using the appropriate equation.
- Develop a personal spending plan that can be used to achieve your financial goals.
The Credit with Confidence module emphasizes the role credit has on your financial wellbeing and the impact personal spending habits have in determining debt levels. In this module, you will learn about the different types of credit, review how you use your credit, and create a strategy to maintain or improve your overall credit.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the Credit with Confidence module, you will be able to:
- Identify the pros and cons of using credit
- Compare the different methods of credit and their potential risks
- Differentiate between “good debt” and “bad debt” by explaining how both are generated.
- Identify strategies for establishing or maintaining a good credit score by evaluating your current spending habits.
The Informed Investing module will explain how personal goals, comfort levels, and method(s) of investment lead to an investment plan that suits you! During this module, you will learn about your internal drivers, establish a foundational knowledge of investment strategies, and generate an awareness of the resources available for continued learning.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the Informed Investing module, you will be able to:
- Differentiate between saving and investing by explaining their relationship and use.
- Explain how personal investment methods are selected by identifying the most common factors of influence.
- Describe the main types of investment by categorizing them based on their main features.
- Construct an investment goal using your preferred investment method.
- Identify supports available when in need of investing advice and information.
The Financial Future module builds on previous workshop content and explores the impact financial planning has on your financial wellbeing. Throughout the module you will reflect on personal goals to determine a plan of action for the future, review strategies for maintaining a long term financial plan and increase your awareness of resources and tool available to expand your knowledge.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the Financial Future module, you will be able to:
- Explain what a financial plan is by identifying the three main elements.
- Identify a minimum of two long-term goals, using the SMART goal setting strategy.
- Develop a foundational financial plan to achieve the two goals identified.
- Understand the importance of financial planning by acknowledging its role in establishing financial wellbeing.
- Identify supports available when in need of financial advice and or information.
