Important Reminders from Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has asked that we share these important reminders with you.
There is a lot of information in this email and it is very important that you read and understand everything. If you have any questions about the information in this email, you can contact us at laurierinternational@wlu.ca or come see us at Laurier International, Arts Building, 2A01.
Information about your Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- You must update IRCC each time you change post-secondary institutions. This is something that is free to do and can be done online.
- If you do change schools but do not update your DLI information with IRCC, you will be reported to IRCC by your previous school as not attending class.
- If you are reported as not attending class, this can lead to an investigation into failing to comply with your study permit conditions. It could even result in you being required to leave Canada.
Your Contact Information
- You must keep your contact information updated with IRCC. You can change your residential address online using a web form.
Working in Canada as an International Student
Working while you are studying
- During regular school semesters, if your study permit allows you to work off campus, you can work a maximum of 20 hours per week at your off-campus job.
- During scheduled breaks in the school year, such as during winter and summer holidays, you may work full-time.
- There is no maximum number of hours that you are allowed to work on campus.
Completing your program and working
- You must stop working as soon as you receive confirmation from your DLI that you have meat the requirements to graduate.
- However, if you have completed your program and were eligible to work off campus during your studies, you can begin working full-time again if you submit your application for a post-graduate work permit (PGWP) while your study permit is still valid.
- If your PGWP application is refused, you must stop working immediately.
- You should not apply for a PGWP to the Canada Border Services Agency at a port of entry.
- If you apply for your PGWP before your study permit expires, you are authorized to work while your PGWP application is in process. Because of this, there is no reason to apply for a PGWP at a port of entry.
It is very important that you comply with the conditions of your study permit. If you do not comply with the conditions, including the rules for working on and off campus, action could be taken against you and any applications you make for future immigration programs could be affected.
