What you need to know about the Insurance Industry

The property and casualty insurance industry is one of the largest contributors to our financial sector and an employer of more than 130,000 Canadians (Career Connections).

Jobs within the insurance industry are extremely diverse but are connected by the fact that they all involve the primary goal of helping individuals and businesses manage risk to protect themselves from loss.

The industry has opportunities for students of all disciplines. Students with a specialized interest or major, such as history, kinesiology, criminology, or women & gender studies, can even land unique roles to match their expertise.

The Insurance Institute of Canada - Career Connections provides an overview of roles that might be a fit for you based on your education, interests, and strengths:

    • Actuary - You're analytical, good with computers and you love math
    • Broker - You're a people person and a great communicator
    • Claims Investigator - You like to help people in times of need
    • Loss Adjuster - You're part private investigator and part therapist
    • Loss Control Specialist - You're good at spotting trouble before it happens
    • Marketing Representative - You're a promoter, presenter and partner
    • Risk Manager - You're a strategist and a planner
    • Underwriter - You're a relationship developer and decision-maker
"Within the property and casualty sector, you'll find professionals involved in virtually every area of Canadian life, including business, government, entertainment and recreation... No matter what your interests or ambitions, the industry offers a world of possibilities." Career Connections
