Long-Term Suzuki Pedagogy Program for Laurier Bachelor of Music Students
The Long-Term Suzuki Pedagogy Program is a specialized two-year course in violin and cello available to students enrolled in Laurier's Bachelor of Music program. Offered by the Suzuki String School of Guelph (SSSG), this program aligns with the Suzuki Association of the Americas Course Syllabi, covering Units 1-8, the Every Child Can course, Teaching Strategies, and Practicum Units. It offers a deep dive into the Suzuki Method™, focusing on its application in both private and group lessons.
The curriculum includes the study of technical and musical development through Suzuki repertoire (Volumes 1-8), scales, technical exercises, studies, and supplementary repertoire. Participants also explore topics such as childhood development, learning challenges, and Body Mapping®.
As part of the program, students will spend two hours per week observing private and group lessons, which can be done live, online, or through recorded lessons. Observations can take place at SSSG or the Suzuki Talent Education of Waterloo (STEW), or through videos from recommended Suzuki teachers.
In the first year, students will attend private lessons of at least one student and practice with them weekly. They will also assist in one group class. In the second year, participants will teach a beginner student under the supervision of the trainer and co-teach a group class throughout the year.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn 1.0 Senior Music Elective credit toward their Bachelor of Music degree at Laurier.
