MA205B: Differential Equations I (Winter 2018)

Calendar Description

First order differential equations; linear differential equations of second and higher order; methods of undetermined coefficients and variation of parameters; Laplace transforms; power series solutions.

Prerequisites

One of MA101, MA102, MA103 (or MA110*), or MA105.

Textbook

R. Kent Nagle, Edward B. Saff and Arthur D. Snider, Fundamentals of Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, 8th Edition, Pearson Addison-Wesley, 2018. (The 6th or 7th editions will also suffice.)

Calculators

Students may only use the approved calculator, Casio FX-300MS Plus required on the midterm test and the final examination. It is available for purchase at the campus bookstore. No other calculator is allowed.

Evaluation

A final mark out of 100 will be calculated as follows:

  • Laboratories: 25%
  • Midterm Exam (Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, 5:30 p.m. - 6:50 p.m.): 30%
  • Final Exam (2.5 hours, exact date, time and location to be announced): 45%

Students must achieve a score of at least 40% of the marks available on the final examination to be eligible to pass the course. The final mark will be reported as a letter grade in accordance with the conversion table of the current undergraduate calendar.
