Eligibility
Students may need to drop or withdraw from their courses or Laurier for various reasons. The Tuition/Late Registration Fee Appeals Committee will consider a petition based on extenuating circumstances. If your situation falls into one of these categories, there is an online form for you to complete and submit along with the required supporting documentation. This Committee has no authority over any other fees such as, incidental, miscellaneous and online learning fees.
Please Note: You will not be considered eligible for a tuition fee appeal for courses you have received a final grade in. If you have received a grade in the course, your first step is to connect with your Faculty and Academic Advising to submit an academic petition regarding that grade. Only dropped courses are eligible for a tuition fee appeal.
Acceptable Reasons
Reason for Appeal
Medical reasons for appealing may include, physical illness and/or psychological problems documented by a medical professional and show case that the illness impacted your ability to participate in courses.
Students with recurring medical conditions should work with a medical professional, accessible learning, or your health provider to determine if academic accommodations are required.
Required Documentation
Students must provide a supporting medical documentation form completed by your healthcare provider and must pertain the term you are appealing.
Reason for Appeal
Students may appeal due to critical Illness or the death of an immediate family member. Immediate family is defined as spouse, common-law spouse, son, daughter, step-children, ward, brother, sister and parent.
Required Documentation
Students must provide a death certificate/obituary or supporting medical documentation form completed by your healthcare provider and must pertain the term you are appealing.
Reason for Appeal
Throughout your academic career, you may touch base with administrative staff. If a delay in receiving information, or a technical error takes place, it may negatively impact your ability to add/drop your course(s). These delays or experiences would be due to issues not within your control, and often an oversight on behalf of the administrator.
Required Documentation
Students must provide a letter of support from program advisor or Laurier staff member knowledgeable about the circumstance that resulted in the error.
Unacceptable Reasons
Laurier is not required to take attendance and is not aware if you are planning to drop/withdraw. Not attending class, not dropping your courses/graduate program milestones on LORIS is not sufficient grounds for a financial appeal. You are responsible for your registration. If you choose to leave your studies for a term, or withdraw from the university, it is your responsibility to take the appropriate steps to leave your academic and financial record in good standing. Financial penalties vary based on when you drop your courses. Review the important dates found in the academic calendar for this information.
If you have left your undergraduate program at Laurier and have opted to participate in studies at another institution, you can complete the tuition fee appeal with a transcript from the other institution showing you were actively in studies during the same semester you are appealing at Laurier.
As a Laurier student, you are responsible to familiarize yourself with the information, rules and regulations at Laurier. This includes deadline dates, policies and regulations found in the academic calendar.
Adding, dropping and replacing courses can result in additional charges to your student account. Dropping courses does not always generate a refund. Registering in new courses may result in additional charges added to your student account.
There are two kinds of dates you should be aware of that are associated with dropping a course: one is academic and may result in a failure and the other is financial. You must make yourself aware of both types of dates as they affect your academic record and your financial account. Once again, all dates are found in the academic calendar.
If you have questions associated with your student account, contact Service Laurier. Students are encouraged to review and understand their invoice and fees.
You are unable to appeal individual fees, interest or fines (e.g. housing, library, parking, etc.). If you experience difficulty keeping your financial account in good standing, you are encouraged to make an appointment with a financial literacy specialist to discuss the resources available to you. In addition, the scholarship, awards and bursaries program may be able to offer financial assistance or guidance on how to improve your financial situation.
If you choose to drop your course, or to withdraw from your graduate program due to financial circumstances, your refund will be tied to the financial drop penalties listed in the academic calendar. Dropping courses due to cost may not result in a refund of your tuition fees.
If you are receiving OSAP, you are responsible for reviewing LORIS and your OSAP application for updates on your application, and to understand the amount of OSAP you are eligible for. Our Student Awards team provides OSAP information, instruction on how to complete your application, and if any actions are required. Not following these instructions are not grounds for a fee appeal. Fee appeals are not reviewed on the grounds that insufficient funds were received, if funding is delayed, or if the application is completed late.
If you experience an issue with your instructor or the course structure, such as the organization of a course, your grades or conduct of the instructor, these situations fall within the authority of the Faculty offering the course. Fee appeals will not be reviewed or considered for disinterest in a course topic or instructor.
If you've identified that the workload for a course(s) is challenging to balance with other commitments, such as work or volunteer commitments, or your overall academic course load, you are responsible for the fees incurred until the date the course is dropped.
If you have a recurring medical condition, it is expected that you work with your medical professional, accessible learning, or health provider to determine if you should be participating in studies, or what an appropriate workload is considering your health circumstances. Not following these recommendations is not grounds for a fee appeal.
Completing your program requires close attention to academic requirements, and we encourage students to work with their academic or faculty advisors for guidance. Advisors are supporting you through your academic journey and will provide you guidance on course selection. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to complete your program requirements as per the details in the academic calendar. By completing courses that are not required for your program, you are not eligible for a tuition fee appeal.
