Incoming Student Support for Indigenous Students

Indigenous Student Services and Laurier 101 are here to support your transition to university. Starting in June, various events and support services are available to you, regardless of your campus.

    SEEDs Indigenous Student Orientation

SEEDs is open to undergraduate  students, providing a strong start to the new academic year.

Each orientation day includes community building, campus tours, and workshops on various topics like writing, time management, and finances.

    Waterloo Campus

Each year we invited first year students to a two day orientation program at the end of August, right before Orientation and Residence move in begins!

Day one: early move in (if you are living in residence) and getting to know the Indigenous Student Centre, Indigenous Student Services staff, and all about university. Your family and community are invited to join in too!

Day two: Let’s get to know campus, get a head start on key academic skills like writing and time management, and get to know one another a bit better! This day is specifically for incoming students only.

Students from the Waterloo, Milton and Online campuses are welcome to attend.

Registration and official dates coming spring 2025!

    Brantford Campus

We are hosting a day long event during Orientation for you, your family and community to attend.

Optional Session: University 101: Learn more about how university works and what to expect, common terminology and some of the online systems that Laurier uses

The Event: Join us for lunch, get to know the Indigenous Student Centre and staff, build key academic skills like writing and time management, get familiar with campus and build community during a fun activity

Students from the Brantford and Online Campuses are welcome to attend.

Registration and official dates coming spring 2025!

    Areas of Support

Here are some areas of support that you can refer to as you transition to university life.

    Undergraduate Course Registration Support

Our learning consultant and recruitment access coordinator offer 1:1 support to help you understand course registration.

We recommend attending your faculty-specific course registration webinar before utilizing drop-ins and 1:1 sessions.

You can also consult the Course Registration Guide, a step-by-step resource that walks you through the entire process of course registration.

    Transfer Student Support

As a transfer student, there are additional steps to prepare for your first year at Laurier. Our office provides support in the following ways:

    • Assistance understanding your transfer credits and how to get them reassessed.
    • Guidance on navigating course registration, including when to register and which tools to use to choose your courses.

    SEEDs First Year Transition Program

Students in their first year at Laurier are encouraged to participate in our SEEDs program.

SEEDs engages students in academic, social and cultural workshops and creates space for students to meet 1:1 with their Indigenous Support Coordintor and Counsellor.  Students who participate throughout the year are eligible to receive a stipend.

This program is open to all first-year students, including transfers, mature students, part-time, and full-time students.

    Indigenous Student Support at Laurier

Our support extends beyond transitioning you to university life.

The Indigenous Student Centre (ISC) offers many programs and services to support you during your time at Laurier.
