Retirement of Campus Emergency Poles: Enhancing Campus Safety

    Aug. 30, 2024
    Print | PDF

In line with our commitment to campus safety and modernization, Wilfrid Laurier University will be retiring the emergency poles on all campuses. Emergency poles are a physical structure with an emergency call button, that when pressed connects directly to Special Constable Service for a two-way communication. This change comes after a comprehensive review of their usage and relevance in today’s safety landscape. The retirement process will be completed by Fall 2024.

Why Are We Retiring the Emergency Poles?

    • Low Usage: Reports indicate that the emergency poles have been rarely used for their intended purpose, with no legitimate reportable incidents since January 2020.
    • Outdated Technology: The emergency poles were installed many years ago and have not kept pace with advancements in safety technology.
    • Funding and Maintenance Challenges: The initial funding for these poles came from a one-time grant, and there are no funds available to maintain or upgrade this aging infrastructure.
    • Modern Alternatives: We have significantly invested in modern safety tools and services that are more effective and better suited to the needs of our community.

    Alternative Safety Measures

Your safety remains our highest priority. We encourage you to utilize the following resources:

    • SafeHawk App: The app provides quick access to emergency services, calling Special Constable Service, campus safety tips, and other essential resources. It is available for iOS and Android smartphones. Remember to enable your notifications for the app.
    • Emergency Phones: Located across campus, these phones provide direct contact with emergency services. You can find their locations on our website.
    • Call SCS or 911: In case of an emergency, you can always contact Special Constable Services at 519.885.3333 or dial 911.

    What’s Next?

The removal of the emergency poles will begin shortly and is expected to be completed by Fall 2024.

You can also continue to familiarize yourself with Laurier’s Emergency Procedures and sign up for SMS emergency notifications as part of the Alert Notification System.
