Scholarships and Awards
Geography and Environmental Studies students receive financial benefit and recognition for their effort and circumstance. Students who complete the general profile found on the Laurier's Scholarships and Bursaries page receive automatic consideration for following scholarships and awards.
This annual scholarship, supported by the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, is awarded to the student with the highest GPA in senior Geography courses in Year 2.
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate students who have completed their second year of the Honours Geography or Environmental Studies program. Students must have completed a full course load in Year 2 as per program requirements.
Supported by the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, this scholarship is awarded annually to the student with the highest GPA in senior Geography courses in Year 3.
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate students who have completed their third year of the Honours Geography or Environmental Studies program. Students must have completed a full course load in Year 3 as per program requirements.
This award, established in memory of the late Dr. Lorne Russwurm and funded by alumni and friends of geography, is presented to a Geography student who produces the best BA thesis in urban geography.
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate students in Geography and Environmental Studies.
This endowed scholarship established in memory of Arthur Beckman by his family and friends is granted annually to the student with the highest GPA in all completed Geography courses as per program requirements.
Arthur Beckman was a high school geography teacher who had a zest for teaching and a love of geography; he was interested in the world and exposed students to other lands and cultures through field trips to Africa, the United Kingdom and eastern and western Europe.
Eligibility: Granted to full-time undergraduate students who have completed their third year in the Honours Geography program.
Endowed by the Lindemann family, friends and Laurier students and supported by the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, this scholarship is presented to the student with the highest GPA in two or more senior resource/land management courses.
Eligibility: Open to full-time undergraduate students completing Year 3, with two or more senior resource/land management courses and demonstrated interest in the field.
Awarded annually to the student with the highest mark in GG100 who is continuing in a departmental Honours program in second year.
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate students in the Honours Geography or Environmental Studies programs.
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate students in Year 4 or graduate students who are registered in Environmental Studies or Physical Geography. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident (landed immigrant) or Protected Person, and be a long-term resident of Ontario. Applicants are judged on their academic excellence in Environmental Studies or Physical Geography and commitment to the field.
Application Deadline: Mid-October
This award is granted at the discretion of the department Special Fund (endowed). Support is only available once during a program and only for an approved project. Funds are for direct expenses only and receipts must either accompany the application or be provided prior to receipt of funds. Applications are evaluated by the chair's advisory committee on the basis of financial need, other monies received and academic merit of the project.
Recipients are encouraged to "repay" these funds after graduation in the form of a tax-deductible donation designated to the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in order that the fund may continue to support thesis research.

Eligibility: Awarded to a full-time student entering their fourth year of the Honours Geography program having received the highest cumulative average at the end of third year. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident (landed immigrant) or Protected Person, and be a long-term resident of Ontario.
Open to full-time undergraduate and graduate students in the Geography and Environmental Studies program, applicants must have authored and be presenting a paper in geography at the annual meetings of the Canadian Association of Geographers. The recipient is chosen by the chair of the department; if the award is not given in any year, an additional award may be given in a subsequent year. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.

This endowed award is granted to one of the top three to students entering year 1 of a full-time Computer Science, Geography or Environmental Studies program. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident (landed immigrant) or Protected Person, and be a long-term resident of Ontario.
This scholarship was started in memory of Jacob (Jake) Ross Clemens, BA'07(WLU), MES'10(UWO). Jacob was a passionate environmentalist, traveler and musician. Jacob died in January 2016 at the age of 30. Jacob's actions and support for his family, friends and the environment will be felt for eternity.
Eligibility: The candidates are full-time senior undergraduate students registered in an academic program in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. The scholarship will be granted to the student who combines good academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 9.0) with significant extra-curricular involvement or volunteer work on campus or in the community.
