Sexual Violence Response Certificate
Are you interested in learning how to build safer spaces for individuals impacted by gendered and sexual violence?
The Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management offers this series of ten virtual workshops that focus on building our knowledge and skills to respond to disclosures and build solidarity for survivors.
Anyone is welcome to attend any workshop, but students who attend five of the ten workshops will receive a Sexual Violence Response Certificate through their Laurier Experience Record.

Survivors who have experienced or been connected to colonial violence are deserving of support and care that acknowledges the ways in which gendered violence and colonial violence intersect. This workshop explores the experiences of survivors who have felt the impacts of colonialism, and how folks can best support them.

This workshop will help you learn about using a trauma-informed perspective to better understand the neurobiological and relational impacts of trauma. When supporting people who have been impacted by gendered or sexual violence, it is important to be aware of the nervous system and trauma based survival responses.

Forms of homophobia, transphobia, and cissexism are often intrinsically linked to gendered and sexual violence, yet 2SLGBTQIA+ voices are often silenced in these conversations. This workshop will help folks learn how to effectively hold space for people who have experienced marginalization due to their sexual or gender identity.

Societal expectations of masculinity and sexuality often create barriers for masculine-identifying survivors seeking support and care. In this workshop, we will examine how toxic masculinity—intersecting with whiteness, colonialism, and patriarchy—shapes the experiences of male-identified survivors. Typically, the needs of neurotypical survivors are often centered and normalized, creating barriers for neurodivergent survivors accessing support. This workshop will explore how we can better support survivors who are neurodivergent, as well as navigating conversations about consent, boundaries and community care through a neuro-informed lens.

This is deeply connected to how the kaleidoscope of different bodies may experience gender-based violence under the gaze of society. In this workshop, we will examine the subjects of bodies, power, desirability, and the idea of the ‘perfect survivor’ and how they collide.
